Two New Shows @ VARGA Gallery: Group Exhibit "Paintings & Sculpture"
Solo Exhibit "Science Fiction Visions of the Past, Present & Future"
VARGA Gallery's March exhibition "Paintings & Sculpture" opens this Saturday, March 8 with a reception from 5 - 7 pm. The Solo Exhibition Space will present "Science Fiction Visions of the Past, Present & Future" by painter Ryan Cormier. "Paintings & Sculpture" runs through April 4, 2008. Cormier's solo show runs through March 19, 2008.
The group exhibit "Paintings & Sculpture" showcases a wide range of works by an unusual collection of sculptors and painters. Race car driver John Lutes present his latest work "Teo" a Robotic Cyborg named after the Teo Race Car Chassis which makes up most of it's parts. An intricate electric blue piece, it stands seven feet tall with weapons, illuminated flora and a crystal brain. Self-taught visionary artist Bruce Anderson pays tribute to Native American activist and member of the American Indian Movement Leonard Peltier in a new woodburn piece depicting the political prisoner. Convicted in 1977 and sentenced to two consecutive terms of life imprisonment for the murder of two FBI Agents, debate continues over his guilt and the questionable fairness of his trial.
Visionary artist Aurora exhibits her rainbow hued glass painting "Big Fish", sculptor David Stoltz shows a stranger than fiction piece aptly titled "Oh, My God" - the reaction it most often elicits, Basia Kaczmarczyk exhibits her latest paintings in the abstract, artist and VARGA Gallery newbie Lillian Alberti shows her whimsical paper mache dolls and shadowboxes, painter Ann Liebowitz brings a series of exquisitely executed shell paintings and local luminary Eleanor Lipkins-Steffen takes us through one of her latest works "A Busy Day". Other artists in the exhibit include AnonymousBlonde, Ed Berkise, Cristine Cambrea, Joseph Eschenberg, Howard Goldson, Laura Gurton, Lenny Kislin, James Kornbluh, Laura Martinez-Bianco, Susan Sammis, Lily Tyson, John Van Orsouw and Christina Varga.
"Science Fiction Visions of the Past, Present & Future" positively dominates the Solo Exhibition Space with a modern hieroglyphic exploration of human emotions, addictions, afflictions and illusions in a robotic world. Artist Ryan Cormier is a studio art teacher in Liberty, New York and resides in Kingston. His three page artist statement expounds on his methodologies and motivations and his favorite store is P&T Surplus on Abeel Street. Cormier's extremely thick vocabulary of self-invented modern hieroglyphic symbols repeat throughout his works and incorporate memory chips, computer keys, stamps, old photos, strange stickers and other random items found in a surplus shop. "Science Fiction Visions of the Past, Present & Future" runs through March 19 and is followed by a solo exhibit of works by Ken Vallario.
The VARGA Gallery in Woodstock, New York exhibits self-taught, outsider and visionary artists. It is located at 130 Tinker Street next to the Tinker Street Cinema.
